This article will walk you through the behavioral settings of Simulation.

Overview


The Behaviour tab in the Simulation component allows you to set additional behavioral settings including:

  • Simulation window
  • Simulation attempts
  • Overlay
  • Action Bar
  • Screen Indicator
  • Introduction
  • Component type (interactive vs question)
  • Results
  • Resume

Simulation window


It is possible to manually set the size of the simulation window according to the size of the screen images you are using.

Alternatively, you can set it so your window size automatically fits the screen image in the Screen tab.

Something to be aware of is that padding, margin, and max width settings also have an effect on the appearance of the simulation window.

You may want to create a specific Article Style for simulations with reduced padding and margin, and an increased max width so there is greater space for the window. This will also help to avoid having a vertical scroll bar along the bottom of the window.

Screen: Simulation attempts


Set the number of attempts you want a learner to have per screen. This is a global setting and will apply to every screen in the simulation.

  • Set number of attempts: Set a specific number of attempts per screen. Once they have used all attempts they will be moved to the next screen.
  • Unlimited attempts: A learner will have an unlimited number of attempts per screen to interact with it correctly. They will only be moved to the next screen once they have answered correctly.

Overlay


The Overlay section in Simulation allows you to add an overlay onto the simulation screen when the instructions, hint, or feedback appear.

An overlay is a translucent layer on the screen image; instructions, hints, or feedback will sit above this layer. This can be set globally or can be turned on for specific instructions in the screen editor.

Action bar


The Action Bar allows you to add a number of action buttons that will sit above or below the simulation screen. These action buttons include:

  • Hint: The hint will always appear in the action bar, use the settings to set when the Hint will appear (always OR after the first incorrect attempt).
  • Full Screen Mode: Enable this to allow learners to experience the simulation in a full screen.
  • Instructions: Enable this to allow learners to review previous instructions that have appeared on the screen.

It is possible to style the Action Bar buttons in the theme.

Screen indicator


The screen indicator allows you to add a progress bar at the top or bottom of the simulation window. It will show you the number of screens in the simulation and it’s also possible to show correct or incorrect marking.

  • Show Simulation Screen Indicator: Set to Show Indicator to enable it.
  • Show Simulation Screen Indicator Marking: This will show a tick or cross in the indicator icons to show whether a screen was answered correctly or not.
  • Show Screen Titles in Indicator: This will add the screen titles (that are added in the screen settings) beneath the indicator icons.
  • Position: Set to the top or bottom of the simulation window.

Introduction


This allows you to add an introductory pop-up to the simulation which may be helpful to explain the context around what the learner is expected to do or learn.

If you want to enable this, follow the steps below:

  1. Select Show Introduction? andset to Show Introduction.

  2. Click on the Introduction dropdown.

  3. Add title and body text.

  4. Add an image or icon to the pop-up.

  5. Position the image or icon.

  6. Set the start button text.

Question component settings


In this section, it is possible to set your Simulation as an “interactive” component or a “question” component.

  • Interactive: This means the component will mark as incomplete or complete. This is useful if you are not looking to assess the learner and just want to know that they have completed the simulation.
  • Question: This means the component will mark as correct or incorrect. This is useful if you are looking to assess the learner. If the component is set to “question” it can be used as part of the Course Assessment extension.

Something to note is using the Simulation as part of a logic trigger. If your component is set to “interactive” you will want your Event in the trigger to be “component complete.” If your component is set to “question” you will want your Event in the trigger to be “component correct.”

Question component


If you set your component as a Question Component, you will be presented with further options:

  • Mark Selected Screens: Set whether you want every screen OR specific screens to be included in marking the overall component as correct or incorrect.
  • Use Screen Correct Percentage: Set whether you require all selected screens to be correct in order to mark the component as correct or set a percentage of screens the learner is required to answer correctly in order to mark the component as correct.

Results


In this section, you can choose to show a results screen at the end of your simulation. The settings available to you will depend on the type of component you have set (interactive or question).

If set to an interactive component:

  • You will have the option to add one results screen including title, body text, and an image or icon.
  • Provide the learner with the option to restart the simulation by enabling “Show Results Restart Button”
  • Choose whether to keep the completion status of the component on restarting.

If set to a question component:

  • You will have the additional option to add correct or incorrect final feedback to the learner including title, body text, and an image or icon
  • Provide the learner with the option to restart the simulation by enabling “Show Results Restart Button.”
  • Choose whether to keep the completion status of the component on restarting.

Resume


Set whether the Simulation will resume in the same place when a learner revisits the page.

Please note that this setting will only work when publishing to Exceed or Bloom as an Evolve course type. This setting will not work with SCORM.

Accessibility


In order to improve accessibility of the simulation, you can choose how the elements on the simulation are displayed when they are focused on.

  • Use Element Focus Styles: The “focus” styles you have set in each element will be used.
  • Use Theme Course Focus Outline: Will use the focus outline color set in the main theme.

It is also possible to set the aria labels for the Next button (found in Instructions) and the Close button (found in the Hint).

You will also find aria labels & alt text fields throughout the simulation component (e.g. elements, images, and instructions).
