Outline

This article details a point in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and what the implications are for creating accessible course content in Evolve and is part of a larger path.

To view the full guidelines, please visit the Accessibility: WCAG 2.1 and Evolve path.

Guideline 2.1.1

Keyboard Level A All functionality of the content is operable through a keyboard interface without requiring specific timings for individual keystrokes, except where the underlying function requires input that depends on the path of the user's movement and not just the endpoints.

Explanation

All content in a course is accessible via the keyboard, without the use of a mouse.

What does this mean for your content in Evolve?

Evolve is by default entirely operable by the keyboard. There is also a visible two-color focus outline that can be set so the learner can see where the focus currently sits on the screen. You can set the color for this in your Theme > Course > Accessibility.

Guideline 2.1.2

No Keyboard Trap Level A If keyboard focus can be moved to a component of the page using a keyboard interface, then focus can be moved away from that component using only a keyboard interface, and, if it requires more than unmodified arrow or tab keys or other standard exit methods, the user is advised of the method for moving focus away.

Explanation

Every action the learner needs to take in a course is not only achievable with the keyboard but also uses the standard methods of keyboard navigation.

What does this mean for your content in Evolve?

This is the case in Evolve. Everything can be navigated or accessed by the tab and arrow keys, as well as the enter key.

Guideline 2.1.3

Keyboard (No Exception) Level AAA All functionality of the content is operable through a keyboard interface without requiring specific timings for individual keystrokes.

Explanation

Every action the learner needs to take in a course is not only achievable with the keyboard but doesn’t have any particular timing requirement by the learner.

What does this mean for your content in Evolve?

This is the case in Evolve. Everything can be navigated or accessed by the keyboard, and there is no timing element to this.
