Tribe Chat lets you chat directly with a peer, start a group conversation dedicated to a topic, or participate in a conversation around a learning activity...all without ever leaving Intellum's learning platform.
Tribe Chat is built into the experience of both the Tribe web and mobile apps. If your organization has enabled Tribe Chat, you'll find the chat icon included in your Tribe navigation panel - on the web and in the mobile app.
Using Tribe Chat
If it's your first time accessing Tribe Chat in a web browser, you'll be prompted to Enable desktop notifications. Desktop notifications alert you to new messages and mentions from Tribe Chat. Click the linked text to enable desktop notifications for Tribe chat in your browser.
You'll see a red circle appear on the Tribe badge in your browser whenever you receive new messages or are mentioned in a Tribe Chat. If you're browsing Group feeds, you'll see the red circle appear on the Tribe Chat icon too.
Start a Conversation
Click the new message icon to start a new chat conversation. Select a Tribe member from the list to add to the conversation, and click OK.
Your most recent conversation is always found at the top of the list and chats with new messages are always bumped to the top of the list.
Alongside messaging, you can also share links, attach files, or if you so choose - communicate only in emoji - no judgement here.
Start a Group Chat
Tribe Chat lets you connect one-on-one, but it also lets you connect to the expertise and interests of your teams and peers by creating group chats.
Create a Group Chat
- Click the new message icon in Tribe Chat.
- Search for and select the users for the group chat.
- Click OK to create the group chat.
Edit a Group Name
- With a group chat open, click the info icon to open chat details.
- Click into the area below Group Name.
- Enter a new name for the group chat.
- Press enter or click the info icon again to make the change.
Get Their Attention
Sometimes you may need to call the attention of another member when having a conversation in Tribe Chat. When you send a message and include an @mention, the person you mention will get notified to follow up.
Share links and attach files to your Tribe Chat messages. In the web app, sharing a video link from YouTube or Vimeo embeds the video in the message window.
When you attach a file to a message (images, videos, pdf, etc.) Tribe Chat embeds the file, and makes it playable or accessible within the message thread.
Review or Remove Content
Tribe Chat gives you the ability to edit or delete any message you send - including messages with links or files attached.
Reply & React
Use the the emoji selector in the message field for quick replies, or add a reaction to individual messages with an emoji reaction.
The emoji selector gives you the option to change the color of your emoji set.
Tribe Chat also supports markdown in messages and gives you the option to add emoji via text - put the name of the emoji between two colons.

Your organization's admin can embed Tribe group chats within learning activities in the Intellum platform. If available, you can use this space to share resources, compare notes, or connect with instructors, experts and peers.
