Equivalencies
Sometimes two or more activities can be similar enough that they should share a completion status, regardless of which one was completed. Content offered in multiple languages, a newer version of an activity a learner already completed, or activities catered to individual learning audiences (e.g. staff training and client training) - sometimes it just makes sense to share a completion across learning activities.
This article walks you through the creation of parent and child equivalency relationships for activities, shows you how to remove an equivalency, follows up on the impacts of equivalencies for learners, and gives you a preview of the learner experience with equivalencies.
Create an Equivalency
The Equivalency Type property creates equivalencies between the activities in your account. To create an equivalency between content, you first identify a Parent activity; then, link an equivalent activity as a Child to the parent.
Things to Note:
- A Parent activity can have multiple linked Child activities
- A Child activity can only be linked to one Parent activity
- A Parent activity cannot also be a Child activity
- A Child activity cannot also be a Parent activity
Activities (including scheduled) can be linked as follows:
- Pages, E-learning, and Assessments can be linked as equivalent
- Paths can only be linked as equivalent to other Paths
- Collections can only be linked as equivalent to other Collections
If a Parent activity is disabled, its linked equivalencies are removed
Identify a Parent Activity
Follow these steps to identify the Parent activity for your equivalencies:
- Navigate to activity Properties.
- Access the Advanced General Properties.
- Find the Equivalency Type property.
- Select the checkbox to 'Make This Activity a Parent...'
- Click Save Changes.
After saving, the activity is ready to serve as a Parent to equivalent Child activities.
Link a Child Activity to a Parent
Follow these steps to link an equivalent Child activity to an existing Parent activity:
- Navigate to activity Properties.
- Access the Advanced General Properties.
- Find the Equivalency Type property.
- Click the search & select dropdown to link this activity as a Child to an Equivalent Parent Activity.
Remove a Linked Child Activity
Remove linked Child activities through the Parent activity's Advanced General Properties. .
Update or remove a Parent activity through any Child activity's Advanced General Properties. Use the search & select dropdown to update or clear a Parent activity.
Equivalency Impacts for Learners
Imagine three activities: A, B, and C.....
A is the Parent activity, B & C are Child activities. When a learner completes A, the following applies to activities B and C:
Prerequisites
Any activity that has B or C set as a prerequisite is unlocked
Path/Collection activity status
Path/Collection Activity Eligibility rules are respected and applied
However - no enrollments are created for B or C, so the learner is not given credit units, Level XP, or awards for the Child activities. Additionally, no letters are sent, or groups assigned. The learner will not see B or C listed in History.
Equivalencies | Learner Experience
When a learner views an equivalent activity in the catalog, she'll see a gray checkmark in the upper left corner of the activity card if an equivalent activity has already been completed.
On the Activity page, she'll see a banner featuring the date the equivalent activity was passed, a link to the equivalent activity, and a link to History.
Locale Banners
If you've set up equivalencies to support learning across locales, learners will be notified when the same activity is available in their preferred language.
