Adding closed captions to videos in your Catalog opens your video content to a much wider audience - making your content both accessible and engaging to your audiences.
This article covers adding a caption file to a video File Activity and gives an overview of the learner experience with captions.
Uploading a Caption File
You add captions to your video files through activity Properties. To support your learning audiences, a caption file can be added to support each language Locale enabled in your account (English, Spanish, German, etc.). So - regardless of the language used in the video - your learners can select a preferred language for the captions.
The Intellum platform requires the WebVTT (Web Video Text Tracks) format (.vtt) for all caption files. You can easily find tools, converters, and services on the web to create a .vtt file - if needed.
To upload a Captions file, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the Properties page of the video file activity.
- Locate the Captions option within the Advanced Properties section.
- Click Upload Captions File.
- Click Choose File to select the caption file to be uploaded.
- Use the drop-down menu to define the language of the caption file.
- Click Save.
To support captions in multiple languages, follow the steps above to upload a translated .vtt file for each language.
Once uploaded, the Properties page is updated to include the caption files you've added - listed by language. Captions are immediately available to learners when added. Use the trash can icon to remove a captions file.

Learners can turn on captions - and, if available, select their preferred language for captions, through the CC icon available in the video controls - as seen below:
