Assessments are designed to help you follow up with users to check how well your content connected with them. The Intellum Platform allows you to easy check your user's retention and create actions based on the results. This approach allows you to connect users with content that engages them in all the right ways.

This article covers creating an Assessment, adding questions to Assessments, the question types and options available for building learner Assessments, creating actions based on answers or results, and managing Assessment properties.

CREATING AN ASSESSMENT

Create an assessment like any other activity.

  1. Navigate to the Activities List.
  2. Click on New Activity and select Assessment from the dropdown.
  3. Enter the Activity Title and Description; you can also enter a Duration or Passing Grade percentage.
  4. Click the Save button when finished.
  5. You are notified that the Assessment was created and you can begin adding questions.

GRADED & UNGRADED ASSESSMENTS

When it comes to learning follow up, you've got options. Our platform gives you the flexibility to create standard, graded assessments or ungraded assessments - for those times you need a little follow up without the grade. Ungraded assessments can help boost learner engagement by:

  • Surfacing survey questions while the learner is engaged in content
  • Allowing learners to self-assess knowledge without being graded on responses
  • Allowing learners to receive credit for attending scheduled activities

By default, the new assessments you create are graded assessments. To make an assessment ungraded, follow these simple steps:

  1. Navigate to the assessment Properties tab.
  2. Find the Grade Type setting with the Assessment Properties section of the page.
  3. Change the assessment Grade Type to Not graded.

You can now build your ungraded assessment using standard assessment questions or survey questions. Ungraded assessments do not reflect Correct/Incorrect indicators for answers submitted by your learners.

QUESTION TYPES

You can build your Assessment by choosing between 12 - scored and unscored question types.

SCORED QUESTION TYPES

  • MULTIPLE CHOICE

Enter a single question and multiple answer option. Numerous answer choices can be set as correct (via checkboxes to the left of the correct answer options), so learners can select all that apply.

  • MULTIPLE CHOICE (SINGLE ANSWER)

Enter a single question and multiple answer options. Only one answer choice can be selected as the correct one (via the check box to the left of the correct answer option).

  • TRUE/FALSE

Enter a single statement and learners must decide if the statement is True or False. Select the correct answer via the radio button to the left of "True" or "False."

  • SEQUENCE

Enter a single question and chronological answer choices. Learners must then place the answer choices in the correct sequential order. Note: Admins must place answer choices in correct sequential order when creating a new Sequence Question. When learners are taking the assessment, the order of the answer choices will be randomized and learners will have to drag and drop to place them in correct order.

  • MATCHING

Enter a single question and pairs (or a pair?) of corresponding answer choices. Learners must match the second column of answers to their corresponding matches in the first column. Note: As with Sequence question types, admins must enter answer choices with correct matches. Choices will then be randomized when learners take the assessment.

UNSCORED QUESTION TYPES

  • GRID

Set up answer choices built around a grid template. The Row labels are the items you wish to have as rateable. The Column labels are the ratings the learner will choose from.

  • GRID (COLUMN VALUES

This question type is the same as the Grid type except numerical values are assigned to each column (from 1 to the total number of columns). The numerical values serve as an additional metric to use when running an analysis report on learners' responses.

  • RANK

Set up a single question or statement. You can then add Rank options, allowing learners to rank the question or statement on a numerical scale (From x to y,) as well as corresponding Labels (from least to most, from most agree to least agree, etc.).

  • TEXT (SHORT)

Provide a statement or question, and learners are allotted a short text box in which to answer. Suggested answer length for this question type: single word or sentence.

  • TEXT (LONG)

Provide a statement or question, and learners are allotted a long text box in which to answer. Suggested answer length for this question type: Multiple sentences or paragraphs.

  • VIDEO

Provide a statement, question, or scenario in the question field. In response, learners record a video using their device's webcam. Note: the video software built into the LMS will require the learner to 'allow' access to their device's webcam before an answer can be successfully recorded. The video software will ask this automatically in the video field, and the learner will need to click 'Allow.' Additionally, after recording their response, the learner will have to click 'Accept the Recording' on their video window before submitting. They can also choose to re-record their response. Both options automatically pop up after the recording has finished buffering.*

  • UPLOAD

Provide a single question or scenario in the text box. The learner answers by uploading any kind of document (Word, image, PDF, etc.)

SETTING QUESTION PROPERTIES

Regardless of the question type selected, each question has the following 4 common properties:

  • Type - the type of question
  • Points - the amount of points awarded for a correct answer to the question, from 0-10
  • Question - the question text
  • Document, Image or Video - a file can be uploaded to this question to accompany the question text, if desired. This is an optional field.

Some questions will not display the Points property since they will either not count towards the score or are manually graded by a facilitator.

Other common properties that appear after the answer options on some question types include:

  • Alphabetize choices on save - if answer options are entered for a question type, the system will alphabetize them based on the text entered when the question is displayed to the learner
  • Custom Feedback - if an Assessment is set to show responses to the learner or the score threshold is set at 100%, checking this box will display a text field for you to enter in a custom message which displays to the learner when this question is answered incorrectly. An example of this message would be "We're sorry, that is not a valid answer. Please try again."
  • Grading Instructions - if this question is auto-graded, nothing displays here. If the question is manually-graded, a text box appears where you can enter grading instructions for the facilitator.

MANAGING QUESTIONS

The Questions tab gives you access to manage an Assessment's questions & Question Pools - you can:

  • Alternate the order of questions using the hamburger icons.
  • Create/edit pools of questions via the Pools dropdown.
  • Choose a number of questions that are required for completion of the assessment in the Questions Required For Completion dropdown.

ADDING AN ASSESSMENT ACTION

The Actions tab in Assessments gives you the power to you create automatic Activity enrollments based on learner performance on an Assessment. You can create an Action dependent on how a learner scores within specific Question Pools of an Assessment or based on the overall Assessment score. You can create multiple Actions on an Assessment and reuse Activities, if needed.

CREATE A NEW ACTION

  1. Click the Add New Action button at the top right of the page.
  2. Use the Type dropdown to apply this action to one of the Assessment's question pools defined or Assessment Total to apply it to the whole Assessment.
  3. Use the Score fields to define the Assessment score range that will trigger the Action.
  4. Select Recommended or Required and search for the Activity that the learner will be enrolled in if they fall within the score range you set for the Action. The Activity will display on the learner's Plan with the status you selected.
  5. Enter an optional number of days within which the activity will be due.
  6. Click the Save button when finished.

To edit or delete an Action, click the pencil or trash can icon to the right of the action.

SETTING ASSESSMENT PROPERTIES

Alongside common Activity Properties[HelpDesk] in Intellum, the Properties tab at the top of your Assessment page gives you access to a number of Assessment-specific settings. Here's a quick overview:

  • Instructions: Provides learner with any instructions needed to complete the Assessment.

  • Grade Type: Determines if an Assessment is Auto graded or Manual graded. If auto-graded, the Assessment is automatically graded when the learner submits the Assessment. If manually-graded, the Assessment must be graded by a Facilitator (see below).

  • Require Correct Answer: Requires the learner to answer each question correctly before moving on.

  • Notify Facilitator of Learner Submission: For manually-graded assessments - all Facilitators defined for this assessment (see below) will receive an email notification of the learner's completion of the assessment.

  • Notify Learner of Instructor Grade: For manually-graded assessments - the learner who completed the assessment will be notified via email that a Facilitator has completed grading their assessment.

  • Randomize Questions: Randomizes the order of questions when viewed by the learner.

  • Randomize Choices: Randomizes the answer options for each question when viewed by the learner.

  • Allow Feedback: Lets learners provide feedback on Assessment questions.

  • Response Visibility When learner Reviews: Determines how answers will display when learner reviews Assessment results.

  • Show All Responses: Shows all questions and correct/incorrect answers provided by the learner after the Assessment is submitted.

  • Show Only Incorrect Responses: Shows all incorrect questions/answers provided by the learner, and hides correct questions/answers after the Assessment is submitted.

  • Hide All Responses: Questions and answers will not be shown to the learner after the Assessment is submitted.

  • Confirmation Page: Displays a Confirmation Page when a learner answers all questions in the assessment, giving the learner the option to review and edit her answers before submitting them. Note: Administrators will see ALL questions and responses.

  • Time Limit: Displays a timer while the learner is in the Assessment. If the learner does not complete the Assessment within the allocated time, they will automatically fail the Assessment.

  • Show Question Pool: Shows the learner the Question Pool for each question.

  • Result Page: Allows delivery of a custom message to the learner when they've passed or failed the Assessment.

ADDING A FACILITATOR TO AN ASSESSMENT

If this Assessment is set to be manually-graded, an additional Facilitators section will appear at the bottom of the Activity Properties page:
